Summary
Master the foundations of biblical theology and decipher the profound structure of sacred texts with a benchmark academic work
Seize the opportunity to renew your perspective on the Scriptures through an exceptionally clear method of textual analysis. Designed for theologians, historians, and exegesis enthusiasts, this university masterpiece approaches the evangelical message with a stimulating rigor. You will quickly move beyond superficial readings by exploring the linguistic structures and historical contexts essential to understanding ancient manuscripts.
Why read this book?
After laying the groundwork for reflection with a rigorous introduction to the problems and methods of modern criticism, you observe the meticulous dissection of the primitive sources of textual tradition. This initial step highlights fundamental documents such as the text of Mark, the Q source, as well as the specific M and L corpora. You will thus measure the historical value of each manuscript before approaching the formal characteristics and poetry of the original parables.
This then allows you to transfer this technical analysis into the concrete exploration of theological content and its dogmatic evolution. By following the articulation of the author’s thought, you will discover how the message is structured around the figure of God as Father and the sovereign notion of God as King. The pace of your learning accelerates as the study confronts traditional prophetic ideas with the mutations of post-exilic Judaism. You will then understand the emergence of the concept of the Kingdom in the world and the unique place accorded to the figure of the Son of Man.
Finally, the study concludes with a masterful synthesis linking the stakes of eschatology to the ethics of Christian living. You will confront the moral principles of the New Testament with the requirements of Jewish law, emerging with a clear reading grid on sin and forgiveness. You close this book with a mind enriched by lasting erudition, fully aware of possessing the essential scientific keys to interpret biblical teaching with authority.

The Teaching of Jesus – T. W. Manson
In these studies Dr Manson’s main object has been to demonstrate two propositions. The first is that the form in which the teaching of Jesus is delivered is determined by two factors: the kind of audience addressed, and the period in the ministry—either before or after Peter’s confession. The second is that the key to the contents of the teaching is the prophetic notion of the Remnant: that ‘the Son of Man’ in the teaching represents Jesus’ formulation of the Remnant ideal; and that he is the Son of Man by embodying that ideal in his own person.
Critical reception
“This masterly treatise . . . one of the most valuable books in New Testament criticism and exposition that we have met with for several years past. It is a great contribution to constructive thought and to a higher historical appreciation of the Gospel records.”
— The Methodist Recorder
